APA Accredited Doctoral Internship

The University of Miami Counseling Center offers a doctoral internship in health service psychology which is accredited by the American Psychological Association, Committee on Accreditation, Office of Consultation and Accreditation, 750 First Street NE, Washington, DC 20002-4242, (202) 336-5979. A year-long doctoral internship is typically the final supervised clinical experience required by professional psychology graduate training programs before granting a doctoral degree. The internship occurs after the doctoral student has completed all course work and practicum experiences. Since the program adheres to a General Practitioner Training Model, it is not necessary to have counseling center practicum experience to apply. Students from clinical or counseling programs are eligible. Click here for the Training Brochure and more information on The Dr. Jess Spirer Doctoral Internship Program, including application procedures.

The Training Program: The internship provides a closely supervised experience in a wide array of clinical and professional activities including individual/group psychotherapy, psychological assessment, intake/diagnostic interviews, career counseling, crisis intervention and outreach. An effort is made to individualize the interns’ clinical assignments and supervisory sessions based upon their needs and interests. In addition to an emphasis on individual supervision by the Counseling Center staff, there are many other training opportunities offered through case conferences, weekly seminars, colloquia and workshops. While the Counseling Center provides psychological services to the University of Miami student body, it is expected that interns who successfully complete the program will develop the fundamental skills and knowledge to launch professional careers in a variety of clinical settings not limited to a university counseling center. The availability of external rotations in several diverse clinical areas and the involvement in our program of clinical practitioners from the South Florida community facilitate a well-rounded training experience.

Qualifications: Successful completion of all required course work, practicum assignments, and qualifying examinations in a doctoral level clinical or counseling psychology program accredited by the American Psychological Association is required by the beginning of the internship year.

Stipend: The internship is for a twelve-month period beginning on August 10, 2025 and carries a stipend of $43,888.

Applications: Application materials must be received by November 1, 2024. The Counseling Center is a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) and adheres to APPIC policies for intern selection.
